Jaguars Varsity Team Wins 2009 AAU Football National Championship

The 2009 AAU Football National Championship Tournament was held during the first weekend of December in central Florida. The 12U division included teams from several states including Florida, Texas, California, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, Washington, and Tennessee. After three grueling games in torrential rains, the Jaguars qualified for the semi-final round and eventually brought the National Championship back to Houston and the YFL.

On Friday, 12/4, the Jags jumped all over the Florida Bandits 22-0, but then ran into a "team of giants" from Maryland and lost 0-14. However, on Saturday, 12/5, the team took out the San Luis Rey Trojans (California) by a score of 14-0 to reach the semi-final round. On Saturday evening, the Jags defeated the top-seeded and oversized Manassas Hokies (Virginia) by a score of 22-0 to make it to the championship game.

The Championship game was held on Sunday, 12/5. The Jaguars had to face the "team of giants", the Takoma Park Rams from Maryland who had already downed the Jags during pool play. The Rams came into the game with a lot of confidence and took an early 1st quarter lead of 14-0. The rest of the 1st half saw the Jaguars tighten up defensively, and methodically move the ball down the field to end the half down 14-7. At the start of the 3rd quarter, the Jaguars continued their drive for the title by tying the game 14-14, and eventually took the lead 21-14 to shock the Rams. The Rams scored in the 4th quarter to tie the game at 21-21, but the Jags sustained a long drive and ate up clock and scored from the 1-yard line with 40 seconds left. The Jaguars defense then held the Rams and created a turnover that allowed the Jags to take a knee to end the game and crush the hopes of the might Rams and bring the national championship to the YFL by a score of 27-21.

2009 YFL Super Bowl Champions Crowned

The battles for the 2009 YFL Championships are over. The post season included some very tight games, and a few upsets. There is only one repeat champion from the 2008 season. The competition level from top-to-bottom has evidently increased to unprecedented levels as no team is a sure thing no matter how good they may seem during the regular season. As most good coaches will tell you....this why you play the game.

The Freshmen game featured the highly-regarded Jaguars being down by 14 against the young Chargers before launching a furious comeback to fall just short as the Chargers escaped with a 14-12 victory and the Championship. The Sophomore game was a renewal of a furious rivalry between the Raiders and Jets. The Jets executed a solid game plan to win the title 18-0. The Jr. Varsity game proved to be a "slobber-knocker" of a defensive game between two of the most potent offensive teams in the league. The Renegades scored a TD with 0:00 on  the clock to inch by the Jaguars with a 7-6 win. The Varsity game featured the Jets, who had just survived a tough and exciting game against the Jaguars to get the Super Bowl berth, going against the speedy Renegades. After a defensive first half, the Jets pulled away with an 18-0 lead and finished the game with a 24-12 victory.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE SUPER BOWL TEAMS ON A GREAT SEASON!!!

CheerXcite Cheer Competition

The 2009 YFL CheerXcite Competition proved to be the largest and best cheer event to-date. The event featured 5 different levels of competition (Ages 4,5,6, Level I, Level II, Team Stunts, and All-Stars). The scores  were very close in all of the divisions as the level of cheerleading techniques and overall competition level has increased over the last three years under the leadership of the YFL Cheer Coordinator, Toya Campbell.
